Zach Russell had the perfect weather backdrop to present on behalf of PMA Engineering to over 70 attendees, both in person and online, at last week’s AIA Kansas City Chapter’s Nooniversity: Tornado Design in IBC and ASCE 7-22. Tornado design is a new addition to IBC 2024 and ASCE 7-22, and this presentation explored its impact on structural engineers. It also covered key architectural considerations, including the factors that trigger these new design requirements, strategies to minimize their impact, and the distinctions between ASCE 7-22 (minimum tornado design), ICC 500 (storm shelter design), FEMA P-361 (safe room design), and FEMA P-431 (refuge area design).
